Bee1’s Trailblazing Path Fostering Climate Awareness in School

At Bee1, we believe that the most sustainable solutions arise at the intersection of education, innovation, and social responsibility.” – Bee1

Mark Douglas, former Director of NatWest Bank across Wales and the Chairman/Founder of NatWest Cymru, transitioned from shaping a national brand to resonate with local communities to founding Bee1. Bee1 epitomises Mark’s dedication to Corporate and Social Responsibility, with a spotlight on environmental challenges, biodiversity, education, community, health, and wellbeing. His expertise as a qualified beekeeper plays a central role, using bees and other pollinators to underline pressing local environmental concerns.

Today, Bee1 has flourished as a leader in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives. With a vision centered on tackling climate change, championing biodiversity, and engaging communities, Bee1 masterfully integrates business objectives with broader societal and environmental goals.

Bee1 offers a myriad of engagement avenues:

Corporate Partnership: Businesses can strengthen their CSR delivery options by partnering with Bee1, making tangible contributions to global climate emergency solutions.
Sponsored Hive: Adopting a local hive not only aids the resident bee population but also conserves local meadows and woodlands, serving CSR goals while benefiting the local ecosystem.
Education: Bee1’s collaboration with Cardiff University’s Pharmabees project equips children with invaluable resources, offering hands-on experiences to understand the significance of pollinators.
Community Engagement: Bee1 actively collaborates with community organizations, hosting sessions on biodiversity, climate change, mental health, and local challenges.
Wellness: Bee1’s initiatives resonate with the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act, underscoring the health and well-being benefits of beekeeping and its produce.

Bee1’s multifaceted initiatives are a testament to their visionary approach. The Bee1 schools program champions child wellbeing and resilience, while their Pollinator Park venture is a proactive response to the decline of pollinator populations. Bee1’s new flagship project, “Our Classroom Climate” epitomises its unwavering dedication to education, arming students with a profound understanding of climate change and the tools to champion environmental solutions. Aimed at primary-level schools, the OCC program offers a suite of downloadable digital lessons and experiments, all meticulously designed to educate children about the environment and empower them to effect positive change. One standout lesson involves pupils capturing carbon to purify classroom air. Through this hands-on activity, they weigh the captured carbon to gauge the cleanliness of their classroom’s air. Upon enrolling, schools receive a hand-held device for real-time climate measurement. In addition, a dedicated school dashboard is provided, enabling teachers to continuously monitor their classroom’s climate and ensuring a holistic, interactive learning experience.

Facilitating a budding collaboration with Bee1, Dafen Primary School in Llanelli, our EntreCompEdu Whole School Global Pioneer School, I foresee immense promise for a future where education comprehensively integrates environmental awareness, entrepreneurial skills, and actionable solutions. With the new Welsh curriculum emphasizing enterprising, creative contributors and ethical, informed citizens, the project with Bee1 aligns perfectly, laying the groundwork for transformative educational experiences. This collaboration is not just an addition; it’s a visionary step towards harmoniously blending entrepreneurial learning with the sustainability goals of the new Welsh curriculum.

Bee1’s diverse initiatives, from championing pollinator conservation to pioneering environmental education, are a testament to its commitment to harmonious entrepreneurship. Their work does not merely focus on promoting environmental health; it actively nurtures community engagement, supports education, and fosters a sustainable approach to business. As such, Bee1 seamlessly integrates profit, people, and planet. Their endeavours resonate with SDGs 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water), 15 (Life on Land), and 17 (Partnerships to achieve the Goal), underscoring their holistic contribution to a more equitable and sustainable world.

  1. Exciting piece about enterprise education from primary to ??? Working with children is always rewarding as they have no inhibitions and encouraging little businesses with an ethical message will bode well for our future generations. Is the Bee1 initiative the follow on from the ground-breaking “The Bumbles of Honeywood” (www.2b-enterprising.co.uk) set up by Sue Poole, the well known animateur for enterprise in the Swansea Bay area? It is great to see schools signing up for this “…entrepreneurial learning…” may this movement continue to grow and become embedded within schools syllabi.
