Christmas Greetings from Harmonious Entrepreneurship Society

In September 1970, Milton Friedman famously declared in The New York Times that “The Social Responsibility of Business Is to Increase Its Profits”. This headline doctrine has dominated management thinking and education for over half a century. Sadly, what has been forgotten is the substance of what he said, namely that generally the responsibility of business will be to “make as much money as possible while conforming to the basic rules of society, both those embodied in law and those embodied in ethical custom.” As a consequence, we now face an unparalleled sustainability crisis that demands urgent collective action.

Rediscovering the True Spirit of Christmas

This Christmas period, we are reminded of another vital message, “Peace on earth goodwill toward man”. (Luke 2:14).  Yet, as with Friedman’s nuanced doctrine, we seem to have lost sight of this call for harmony. We are destroying human life, inflicting suffering, damaging health and wellbeing, causing hunger and famine, increasing poverty and hardship, damaging our environment, and jeopardising the very future of our planet and its inhabitants.

This season, may we rediscover not only the joy of giving but also the profound importance of peace and harmony – values echoed in The Buddha’s words, “Better than a thousand hollow words is one word that brings peace”

May we live in harmony with each other and our planet.

May 2025 bring joy, hope and peace to you and your communities.
