“Innovation and sustainability aren’t just about what we create, but how we create, and who gets to participate in the process.” – Sarah and Julia, Co-founders of The Sustainable Studio
In Cardiff, a transformative force is reshaping the creative landscape, turning a former munitions factory and Transport Club into a beacon of creativity, sustainability, and community. The Sustainable Studio (TSS), operational since July 2016, stands as a testament to what visionary leadership and a commitment to social justice can achieve. At the heart of The Sustainable Studio’s ethos is a deep-rooted belief in using creativity as a vehicle for social change.
Founders and sisters, Julia Harris and Sarah Valentin, have dedicated more than 15 years to dismantling barriers in the arts for marginalised communities. They have also been pioneers in the fashion industry with their sustainable clothing brand, DaTi (Welsh for ‘Good on You’). Their journey began with the upcycling fashion label ‘Zolibeau’ in 2011, highlighting their innovative spirit and commitment to environmental stewardship. Over the years, their pioneering efforts have led to collaborations with high-profile entities such as Oxfam, John Lewis, and IKEA. Their creations have been showcased in prestigious venues like the Senedd and have gained recognition in Dazed and Vogue magazine. Beyond these achievements, they have developed a centre to support and promote the creative sector in Wales. By offering affordable studio spaces, professional development opportunities, and a platform for underrepresented voices, they are not only nurturing talent but are also actively contributing to SDG 16’s call for inclusive societies and institutions. Sarah shares, ‘We both are passionate about bringing people in the community together to share skills, inspire, learn, and create together. We would love for more people to support us in doing more for our community.
Sarah and Julia have expanded their impact beyond their primary ventures, engaging in workshops focused on clothing reuse and upcycling. In collaboration with charities such as Barnardo’s, The Prince’s Trust, BAWSO, MENFA, and others, they have imparted basic sewing skills. Their work with grassroots organisations has been inclusive of BAME and LGBTQIA+ communities, further broadening their reach. Through mentorship, they have empowered many individuals in the creative industries, supporting their development with internships and placements. This comprehensive approach has left an indelible mark on Cardiff’s creative landscape.
TSS is a creative co-working space to gather, learn, share skills, exchange ideas and knowledge, network, and collaborate on projects not just for business but for the benefit of the wider community.

Fostering Inclusivity, Creativity & Environmental Stewardship
The Sustainable Studio’s inclusive approach fosters a vibrant community, embracing members from a wide array of disciplines, including fashion designers, filmmakers, painters, craftsmen, and musicians. This eclectic mix not only enriches Wales’s cultural tapestry but also cultivates a spirit of solidarity and mutual support. By offering a nurturing space for creative talents from diverse backgrounds, The Sustainable Studio dismantles barriers to arts participation, thereby advancing social justice and peace. Since its inception in July 2016, over 200 members have found a home at The Sustainable Studio, with more than 15,000 individuals passing through its doors. The studio’s commitment to sustainability is manifest in all facets of its operation. It champions the repurposing of old buildings into creative spaces, a practice that conserves resources and minimises environmental footprints compared to new constructions. Moreover, its focus on sustainable garment production and upcycling projects underscores The Sustainable Studio as a beacon of eco-friendly practices.

The more recent introduction of The Reading Room project marks a new milestone in The Sustainable Studio’s journey. This initiative provides a space for community members to engage with critical issues such as inequality, environmental sustainability, and social justice. By facilitating discussions and encouraging active participation, The Sustainable Studio is not just promoting literacy but is empowering individuals to organise, advocate, and envision a better future.

As The Sustainable Studio continues to evolve, its impact on the community and the creative industry in Wales and beyond is undeniable. By championing sustainability, inclusivity, and social justice, Sarah and Julia are not only contributing to SDG 16 but are also inspiring others to take action. Their story is a powerful reminder that creativity, when harnessed with intention, can be a formidable force for positive change. It challenges us to reconsider the role of art and creativity in society and to recognize the potential of inclusive, sustainable practices in building stronger, more just institutions. Notably, it contributes to SDG 8 by promoting sustained, inclusive economic growth and decent work through its support for creative enterprises. It aligns with SDG 9 by repurposing and revitalising urban spaces for innovative and sustainable use. Efforts to champion inclusivity and diversity echo the objectives of SDG 10, directly addressing inequalities within the creative sector and beyond. Through its community-centric initiatives and sustainable practices, it advances SDG 11, aiming to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Its commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible consumption practices contributes to SDG 12, while its actions to minimize its carbon footprint and engage in eco-conscious projects support SDG 13. By fostering an environment of solidarity, inclusivity, and community engagement, The Sustainable Studio upholds SDG 16, contributing to the development of peaceful and inclusive societies. Moreover, its collaborative projects and partnerships underline the importance of SDG 17, showcasing the power of collective efforts in achieving sustainable development goals.

Great article and thanks for sharing The Sustainable Studio’s journey and vision. So many great social businesses, especially in the creative industries, are succeeding but under the radar for many. And, the founders have established strong partnerships, provided opportunities for the wider, often marginalised communities, and still seeking out new ways of working and socialising in harmony. Wishing The Sustainable Studio continued success and growth
