GEW 2023 Day 2: Celebrating Entrepreneurial Excellence & Sustainable Futures at Dafen School

As we delve into the second day of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2023 at Harmonious Entrepreneurship Society, the essence of our mission comes to the fore: instilling entrepreneurial thinking in young minds as a cornerstone for a sustainable and harmonious future. In my role as a facilitator of a transformative journey at Dafen Primary School, South Wales, supported by the invaluable insights and guidance of David, IICED (UWTSD), and the wider EntreComp Community, we’re pioneering a path that intertwines entrepreneurial education with the ethos of sustainability and social responsibility.

Having engaged in the ‘Being Entrepreneurial 2023 – Skills for Change’ conference in Brussels, I’m reminded of the vital role entrepreneurial skills play in today’s rapidly evolving world. These skills are more than tools for business; they’re the building blocks for creating adaptable, resilient individuals who can navigate and shape the future with ethical, sustainable values. The work at Dafen School, underpinned by the EntreComp framework, is a testament to this belief. As educators, we’re not just imparting knowledge; we’re nurturing a mindset that views challenges as opportunities for innovation and growth.

The collaborative spirit at Dafen School, fuelled by the support and engagement of staff, students, parents, and the wider community, exemplifies the essence of Harmonious Entrepreneurship Society. Together, we’re breaking new ground, demonstrating how entrepreneurial education can be seamlessly integrated into the curriculum and daily life, fostering skills that extend beyond academic success. This holistic approach aligns perfectly with the principles of the Welsh Well-being of Future Generations Act, guiding us to impart lessons that will echo through generations.

The journey at Dafen School stands as a compelling story of collective ambition and tangible impact. The initiatives and projects led by the school’s dedicated staff and pupils—ranging from fostering environmental sustainability to driving community engagement—serve as powerful demonstrations of entrepreneurial skills brought to life. These initiatives go far beyond the confines of standard school projects; they are the planting of seeds for a more harmonious and sustainable future.

At the event, I was honoured to receive the EntreComp Champion Award from Dr Dana Puia Morel of the European Commission. This moment, overflowing with personal pride, was not just a recognition of my journey but a celebration of the entire Dafen School community—from our diligent students and staff to the supportive parents and extended community members. The presence of notable figures like Dr. Horst Heitz and Paul Rübig, President of SME Connect, along with other distinguished representatives from the European Commission, highlighted the significance of our collective endeavour within the expansive global EntreComp network. This accolade, recognising both individual and organisational champions of EntreComp, powerfully underscored the extensive reach and profound impact of our shared commitment to fostering entrepreneurial skills across Europe and beyond.

As I reflect upon and share this story, I do so with a sense of immense pride and unbridled optimism. The work we undertake at HES, especially in fostering the spirit of entrepreneurship among young minds, transcends the traditional boundaries of education. We are part of a movement that is cultivating a world where business savvy and social responsibility are not just parallel paths but are intrinsically intertwined. Our journey is continuous and marked by perpetual challenges, yet the prospects for positive and transformative change are boundless. In unity, we are doing far more than just shaping minds; we are actively sculpting the future.
