An Entrepreneurship Education Rising Star

Today I learned that Christine Samy Habib has been awarded a Senior Lectureship at Leeds Trinity University. I first met her in 2007 when I left the UK to help set up what was essentially a social enterprise, the British University in Egypt.  She was a student there on our Entrepreneurship module, which we introduced not just to the University’s Business Administration degree but to the country. The BUE students had never heard of entrepreneurship, but I was fortunate.  Not only were several of them highly entrepreneurial, but there was a cohort of some of the most intelligent, eager to learn young people it has been my privilege to teach, anywhere in the world. Several are now contributing to the promotion of entrepreneurship both in Egypt and elsewhere, including the UK.

Christine graduated with a first class British honours degree and went on to study for her Masters at the University of New South Wales in Australia. On her return to Egypt, she re-joined The BUE as an Assistant Lecturer and co-taught our by now Entrepreneurship degree specialism. During that period she spent time at the weekends providing enterprise training to women in the impoverished communities of urban Cairo.  Our students loved her.

Eventually, she left the University to study for her Doctorate in the Hunter Centre at Strathclyde University in Scotland under the supervision of Professor Katerina Nicolopoulou. Her research topic was an ethnographic study of marginalised female entrepreneurs in Greater Cairo, and I know from discussions with the late Professor Alistair Anderson, for example, (of Lancaster University and Editor of “Entrepreneurship and Regional Development”) that he thought highly of her and her work. In 2020, she joined Leeds Trinity University as a lecturer and today I was delighted to learn that within 3 years of taking up her appointment, the University had awarded her a Senior Lectureship.

Mabrouk Christine. An exceptional promotion for an outstanding  student, mother and academic. May you go from strength to strength. You have so much to contribute.

I am sure your students, colleagues and all who know you will want to join me in congratulating you and wishing you further success.
