Nicki Page and Leo Downer from TLC Health & Wellness
In 2017, according to the Global Wellness Institute, Wellness Tourism was worth $639 billion and pre pandemic it was predicted that by 2022 it would be worth $919 billion. Already it is outselling traditional tourism by some 53 percent but as Leo Downer, co-founder of TLC Wellness Tourism has said “it seems wrong that this personal improvement should be at the detriment to our climate and the bio diversity of our planet”. Accordingly, he and his co-founder, Nicki Page developed in consultation with Nick Campion from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, the world’s first dedicated measurement tool, a Harmony Quality (or Kite) for wellness tourism, travel and hospitality. The aim being to help businesses embrace sustainability, and reduce their harmful environmental impacts.
‘The Harmony Golden ratio’ is awarded to wellness destinations and organisations that undergo a process of review and improvement towards addressing the socio-environmental impact of their operation delivery and/or development. It uses internationally verified financial modelling to create a clear cost figure that can be used to help destinations and operations become impact negative. To achieve the highest rating a destination or operation needs to demonstrate that it has a positive impact for people, planet and place.
Developed in consultation with professionals in sustainability, global hotel brands, health, community safety, education, transport and government, the tool is the brainchild of serial marketing Entrepreneur Nicki Page and Executive Director, Leo Downer.
“The Art & Science of understanding Wellness, and its marketing is a position that we believe is critically important to tourism, as we transform ourselves and the industry to adjust to new paradigms, that demand we take account of Health & Wellness expectancies, and Sustainability requirements, for People Planet and Prosperity. A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being can be achieved and maintained through personal choices and action“.
Nicki has a Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism Marketing from the University of Surrey and has acted as an entrepreneurship mentor at The University of Cambridge. She founded TLC Wellness Tourism in 2002, and has over 30 years of experience in the wellness tourism industry, particularly in the Gulf States.
Leo Downer is an experienced Executive Director with a demonstrated history of working in the civic & social organization industry. He is skilled in Government, Public Speaking, Fundraising, Policy Analysis, and Strategic Planning for Government and Social Change.
